Opinion Editorial - Written By Tariq Smith

I think the FDA placing labels on all food and drug products will eventually help out the state of the economy in the long run. It will ensure that no consumer is given less than adequate treatment when dealing with health safety. A company that is serving them should no longer mistreat consumers. Also, if a person has some type of health issue then they have the option of proceeding with caution before buying the product.
This also allows people to research a type of illness that specifically runs in their family so in that case they can make sure any possible side effects. Also, the military may have great use for this. Especially with rations being some of the only nourishment provided, the FDA’s added labels make the lives of our soldiers easier. The last thing we need is an unhealthy soldier defending our nation. Also the labels allow people to know exactly what is inside the product that they will be using specifically.  That way it will already be known whether you must carry the item or product with care or what kind of temperature it should be stored in. The mass of the item, also the label might state directions on usage, and even directions if the item comes into contact with the body. All these things make the lives of the military force better just because of a simple label that informs people about what they actually coming in contact with.
The FDA’s labels will also have a large effect on the economy of the nation. For one, businesses will have to spend more money in order to place these labels on each and every product that they are trying to sell. Also this will affect how businesses make the package, which contains whatever they are selling. I think the economy will like any other major change; have an extremely hard time dealing with this. The government will probably make up countless excuses as to why this is bad when in all reality the government just doesn’t like to cope with change. There will be a very large effect because of the labels but the government will over exaggerate the change ten fold. In think there will be plenty of setbacks such as budget cuts and firings but this is not something we  will not be able to get through in time.

News Article - Written By Sekai Harris

Many things have been said about food processing, some negative and some positive. Recently I sent
my reporters to do some research on The Food Processing Debate just to have a better understanding of everything going on. Senator Albert Beveridge brought it to Americas attention that by the turn of the 20th century, Americas food was as he said “rotten”. The novel “The Jungle”, By Upton Bell Sinclair, was written to let America know about the reason why people say so many negative things about food processing. The novel says that the reason for all of the negative comments is because the slaughter houses are filthy and that that is no place to handle any type of food. After reading about these slaughter houses many people were turned off, including President Theodore Roosevelt.

Official Food Label

Food and Drug Act is Passed
By Tariq Smith

Effective Jan. 1st 1907

The Food & Drug Act has just been passed. All companies must place labels stating EXACTLY what is in your product. Any product that fails to have these labels will be taken off of shelves and the company will be at risk of being sued and or fined a sum of money. This also applies to drugs as well. Any and Every Drug placed out on the market must have a label due to recent reports of peoples health being in danger. This has been the start of a new era. As of Jan. 1st 1907 every time you go to buy a product off of shelves, it will have one of these labels on it

This will help peoples dietary needs as well as make sure allergies do not come into play. Certain people have history of bad health conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. With this label the FDA can make sure the consumer is aware of the ingredients and not put anyone at risk of serious health problems. Also this prevents many lawsuits based upon injuries due to ignorance. If people try to sue major companies based on a certain ingredient consumption then they better think twice because an excuse can no longer be “I didn’t know” because the ingredients are always going to be on there.
The FDA has made sure that every consumer will no longer have ignorance when buying a product. Hopefully the world will take note of what they are doing and alter its food distribution with the same respect and kindness that the FDA is treating America with.

Annotative Bibliographies

Free Dictionary

This source wasn’t helpful in the slightest way. It only gave a very brief synopsis of the Food and Drug Act. As a matter of Fact this gave no in depth information whatsoever. I would not recommend this link to anyone because I am positive that if you research the entire document you can find loads more information. This link shows you other random links to things that other websites would like you to purchase.

FDA

This link was very helpful because not only did it show the Act in its entirety, but it also showed other things such as definitions and rules. This also placed every part of the act into its own category. This made it easy to navigate through the entire web page to any particular part that you desire. This also has the effects of the Food and Drug Act in future years.

Vaults of Erowid

This is also the Act in its entirety. It exactly states when the Act took effect as well as it gives a general two sentence overview on what the act is about. It is really the same as any of the other page about the Act. This isn’t the first link that I came across so I would recommend this link as well as any other link that gives you the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 in its entirety

Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906

This site was beneficial to me because it allowed me to gain the opinion of a person other than myself. Also, it allowed me to see the repercussions of the Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906 in the next few years; The next act to pass was the Harrison Act (1914). This link gave me more information about the drug part of the act. Most of the other links that I have researched have told me about the labels for food but this told me about the labels on drugs

Landmark Document in American History

This taught me about the Senate and the House of Representatives. This had a lot of information which was the actual Act. It contains all of the Sections in Order. It also tells about the territories such as Washington DC. Plus it explains what the Secretary of Treasury. It was hard to learn much from this because it was very long and hard to concentrate on. This is a good document if you want clear cut facts but if you want to grasp a firm knowledge quickly then I would not recommend this to someone of a younger age.

Taming the 'Jungle'

This web site had a lot of very useful information. It helped me to better understand what exactly happened with the Food Processing Debate. It has a lot information about President Theodore Roosevelt and his to secret Commissioners. It also talks about how Roosevelt called a reporter’s findings "Revolting". I believe using this website helped me more than some other websites because it was simple and got straight to the point. Some of the other links weren’t as useful because they didn’t state all of the facts, they were more about what the debate was but not what it was and what happened with it.

Food Processing Debated

This was not one of the best links to use for this project because Wikipedia can be edited by anyone but it was still informational. This website talked about “The Jungle” which is a novel that was made in 1906 written by a journalist named Upton Sinclair. This website basically explained about the novel more than the bigger picture. I like this website thought because it informed me about the novel therefore giving me a better understanding when the topic of “The Jungle” comes up. I wouldn’t recommend that someone use this a their first choice but more as a fall back.

Industry

This was a very useful document because it talks about Upton Bell Sinclair and gives us more information on the author of the novel "The Jungle". After it talks about the author it goes into detail about why Upton Bell Sinclair added certain things into his novel. It points specific parts of the novel that catch most peoples attention when they read it. I believe out of all of the documents, this is one of the best and most informational. I would recommend this to other people as a source because it has a lot of great information in it.

Upton Bell Sinclair

This is a very useful link because it is basically like a biography on Upton Sinclair. I think it is important to know more about the author because you can learn more about where he came from and try to see things from their perspective. This is a very useful website to me. I would recommend that people get to know the author more when your reading something that that person wrote.

Teddy Roosevelt and Rotten America

This website is very useful to because it gives another perspective on the topic of the food processing debate. This article talks about Theodore Roosevelt's life and also the article talks about how Theodore Roosevelt felt about all of this “craziness” going on. This site starts off talking about how at the turn of the 20th century America’s food was rotten. The site said that the reason for this “rotten food” was the dirty slaughter houses. They also talk about how the law now prohibited allowing the diseased food in interstate and foreign commerce. I this is a great source of information.
